Asia Cup Hockey: India eves lose to China in final

November 6th, 2009 BANGKOK - The Indian women's hockey team edged past South Korea 3-2 to enter the final of the Asia Cup and also qualify for the 2010 World Cup in Argentina. India led 3-0 with two strikes from Jasjeet Kaur and one from Rani Ramphal before Korea came back strongly in the final moments through goals from Eun Sil Kim and Mihyun Park here Friday.

September 21st, 2009 BHOPAL - The selection trials for the Asia Cup-bound India under-18 boys' hockey team has resumed at the Regional Centre of the Sports Authority of India (SAI) here. The Asia Cup will be held in Yangon, Myanmar from November 14 to 22.

India will play their first two matches in Victoria Oct 9 and 11 and then move to Vancouver for the rest of the series Oct 14, 16, 18, 21, 24, Hockey India said in a statement Wednesday.

August 1st, 2009 KARACHI - Pakistan hockey legend Hassan Sardar believes a successful revival of the national game can happen with regular exchanges of home-and-away matches against old rivals India. Hassan, currently serving as Pakistan hockeys chief selector, said the two former Asian giants will have to play against each other regularly to lift the profile of the sport in the region.

July 30th, 2009 BHOPAL - The Indian women hockey team has been practising hard for forthcoming Asia cup at a training camp in Bhopal. The team has been working on coordination, defence, converting penalty corners and has been monitoring games of strong opponents on CD's, so as to follow their weak points.

July 23rd, 2009 NEW DELHI - Hockey India Thursday launched its own logo which resembles the Ashoka Chakra in the form of 24 hockey sticks forming a wheel. The 24 spokes of Ashoka Chakra are the inspiration for the logo.

July 17th, 2009 NEW DELHI - Manipur's Ningomban Amubi Devi will lead the 18-member India girls squad in the under-18 Asia Cup Hockey that will be held in Shanghai from July 20-26. India are in Pool A and will play their first match against Sri Lanka, Monday.

June 27th, 2009 KARACHI - Pakistan failed to earn a direct spot in next years World Cup in India after losing to South Korea in the Asia Cup final last month but the countrys hockey officials are hoping that their team will make the cut for the quadrennial spectacle without having to feature in the qualifying rounds. Quoting unidentified sources, The News reported Saturday that Pakistan might earn a direct spot for the 2010 World Cup to be held in India by virtue of being the Asia Cup runners-up.

June 16th, 2009 NEW DELHI - The International Hockey Federation (FIH) has granted full-membership to the newly-formed Hockey India as the sole governing body for the game in the country. FIH secretary general Peter L Cohen in a letter to Hockey India June 14, said: "All the formalities required by the FIH Congress for the transfer of membership have been fulfilled and I am pleased to confirm that Hockey India is now formally recognised as a member of the FIH (in place of the Indian Hockey Federation) as the sole governing body for hockey, men and women, in India." Cohen said that the FIH Congress in Los Angeles in November last year had approved the transfer of membership from the Indian Hockey Federation to Hockey India.

June 12th, 2009 NEW DELHI - More than 50 men's and women's state hockey units would attend Saturday's meeting at Aamby Valley in Maharashtra to deliberate on the situation arising out of the setting up of Hockey India (HI) as the apex body for the sport, Bengal Hockey Association (BHA) president J.B Roy says. "The office bearers of these associations would deliberate at length on how to cope with the unpleasant scenario that has arisen because of the blatant and undemocratic move by Indian Olympic Association (IOA) to set up Hockey India," a BHA statement quoted Roy as saying.

June 11th, 2009 NEW DELHI - The newly-formed Hockey India (HI) met here Wednesday and decided to revive the senior national championships. "The executive council of Hockey India met and unanimously decided to hold the event in Pune September 13-27," secretary general Aslam Khan said in a statement.

June 6th, 2009 NEW DELHI - The newly-created Hockey India (HI) umbrella body has been formally recognised by the International Hockey Federation (FIH), it was announced here Saturday. In the wake of severe criticism of the way the HI was set-up by the Indian Olympic Association (IOA), HI officials called a hurried press conference Saturday to announce that it has got FIH approval.
