KOLKATA - Mohun Bagan registered their maiden victory in I-League soccer by prevailing 2-0 over Viva Kerala despite a less than impressive show here Monday.

Bagan struck gold after a barren first half as Snehashish Chakraborty and substitute Manish Mathan found the target at the Salt Lake Stadium. The city giants showcased a pedestrian variety of the game, executing poor passes and exhibiting a lack of cohesion, with their strength depleted by the absence of four key players including Jose Barreto.

The first goal was the result of a faux pas by Viva custodian E.C.Sharath who was error-prone throughout the 90 minutes. He failed to properly grip Bagan Right wingback Surkumar Singh’s rasping grass-cutting shot from about 28 yards and Snehashish Chakraborty hammered home a left footer.

Mathan doubled the lead at the fag end of the game as he latched on to a Edeh Chidi centre and put the ball into the net, as Sarath remained inexplicably stranded.

With Monday’s win, Mohun Bagan have moved to the seventh slot with three points from as many games. Viva languish at the bottom, yet to open their account after two matches.
