Pavano pitches Indians to 11-1 win over Tigers

CLEVELAND — Carl Pavano tossed eight sharp innings and the Cleveland Indians routed the Detroit Tigers 11-1 on Sunday to win their weekend series against the AL Central leaders.

Asdrubal Cabrera and Grady Sizemore each hit a two-run homer off Armando Galarraga (5-10) as Cleveland totaled 13 hits and won for the seventh time in 10 games.

Pavano (9-8) allowed one run and six hits to improve to 3-0 with a 1.93 ERA against the Tigers this season. The 33-year-old right-hander struck out four and walked one in his first win since a 5-4 victory at Detroit on July 11.

Cleveland has traded away five key players already this season and may work a waiver deal for Pavano, who has been healthy after years of injuries. He has worked 125 2-3 innings, nearly tripling his total from the previous three seasons with the Yankees. His 9-8 record matches what he did over four years in New York.

Sizemore capped Cleveland’s five-run fourth inning with his 15th homer and Cabrera’s fifth of the season made it 8-0 in the sixth.

Galarraga allowed eight runs and 11 hits over 5 2-3 innings to fall to 0-3 in five starts since beating Oakland on June 30. The Tigers are 5-12 in his last 17 starts and have lost five of seven overall.

Galarraga went 3-0 against the Indians a year ago, but is 0-3 with a 9.18 ERA against them this year.

Ramon Santiago hit a sacrifice fly in the eighth to account for Detroit’s only run.

Cabrera helped the Indians get off to a fast start in the first. He singled with one out and scored when Shin-Soo Choo doubled into the left-field corner.

Tigers manager Jim Leyland argued Cabrera should have been held at third after a fan reached over a railing and touched the ball. Plate umpire Mike Winters ruled Cabrera would have scored if not for the fan’s interference.

Cabrera finished with three hits and Sizemore, Jhonny Peralta and Luis Valbuena each had two for the Tribe. Andy Marte and Trevor Crowe had two RBIs apiece.
