3 NL teams win with the minimum
One run was enough for a victory for three National League teams Wednesday, the first time in 33 years there were three 1-0 games in one league on the same day.
According to the Elias Sports Bureau, the last time there were three 1-0 games in one league was Sept. 1, 1976, in the NL. On that day, St. Louis beat Cincinnati in 11 innings; Houston defeated Philadelphia; and New York beat San Francisco. The home teams won all those games.
On Wednesday, the Mets, Dodgers and Reds came away with 1-0 victories.
New York was the first team to win with the minimum. Mike Pelfrey, with some help from the bullpen, won a pitchers’ duel against Yovani Gallardo and the Milwaukee Brewers at Miller Park. Ryan Church singled in the only run in the sixth against Gallardo, who struck out 12 in seven innings.
The Los Angeles Dodgers were next up, beating the Colorado Rockies 1-0 at Chavez Ravine. Rookie Clayton Kershaw started for Los Angeles, but Ramon Troncoso ended up with the win when Rafael Furcal singled in the only run in the eighth. Jason Hammel tossed a complete game for the Rockies.
The Cincinnati Reds made it a hat trick of 1-0 games, beating the Arizona Diamondbacks. Johnny Cueto and three relievers combined on a two-hitter for the Reds at Great American Ball Park. Joey Votto accounted for the only run with a sixth-inning RBI single off Jon Garland, who allowed six hits before two Arizona relievers combined to pitch the final three frames.
The most notable difference between the three 1-0 games on Sept. 1, 1976, and the three on Wednesday: the number of pitchers used.
The six teams on Wednesday used 18 pitchers; only Hammel went the distance and he pitched eight innings.
The six teams that played 1-0 games on Sept. 1, 1976, used nine pitchers. Three tossed complete games (New York’s Jerry Koosman, San Francisco’s John Montefusco and Houston’s Bo McLaughlin) and the starters in the 11-inning game played by Cincinnati and St. Louis (Fred Norman for the Reds and Eric Rasmussen for the Cardinals) each threw 10 innings.
According to the Elias Sports Bureau, there has never been four 1-0 games in the same league on the same day.
