We all need to look at the world around us in a more defined focus and not just through rose tinted spectacles. This is why the desire to reduce UK carbon emissions by at least 80 per cent by 2050 will create huge challenges for all parts of the economy - business and consumer alike. The reality in meeting this ambition requires virtually no carbon emissions from UK homes by 2050. While the target is clear we cannot foresee what 2050 will actually look like due to all the inevitable changes (social, economic, technical and political) that will occur in the intervening 40 years.
But the basic human needs to keep warm and have access to hot water will remain constant and the challenge for industry to deliver this with no carbon emissions is immense. It would be easy to wait for something to happen through new technology, fuel shortages, price hikes and rationing but the market can only be transformed to a low carbon one by a clear and practical plan.
