TAIPEI, Taiwan - Embedded designs deliver high quality consumer experience; hybrid TV expands OEM market reach
Telegent Systems, the company that makes television mobile, and Topstar Digital Technologies Co., Ltd., the leading ODM/OEM supplier in China for notebooks, today announced that Topstar Digital will be demonstrating the industry’s first netbook and all-in-one PC with embedded hybrid digital and analog free-to-air TV at Computex in Taiwan this week (Upper level, booth N305, N307). The netbook and PC designs, which leverage Telegent’s breakthrough PC TV technology, will be available in mass production later this year and are targeted at overseas markets.
Embedded designs improve consumer viewing experience
By embedding the hybrid TV feature, Topstar’s netbook and all-in-one PC designs improve PC TV usability and feature access while enabling the broadest coverage across both digital and analog broadcast networks. Topstar’s 18″ all-in-one PC is designed from inception for hybrid TV, with the entire system optimized to deliver industry-leading TV performance.
“The high performance, low power and small size of Telegent’s PC TV technology has for the first time enabled us to reliably embed high quality hybrid TV in our designs, simplifying the addition of this desirable but technologically complex feature,” said Mr. Xiaobo Wu, chief executive officer of Topstar. “This opens up new opportunities for Topstar to leverage the embedded TV feature to differentiate our product offerings and expand our reach into overseas markets.”
Hybrid TV support future-proofs solution for consumers, expands manufacturers’ market reach
The hybrid TV feature, supporting both DVB-T and worldwide analog TV broadcast standards, future-proofs Topstar’s netbook and PC and designs in countries undergoing or planning to undergo a conversion from analog to the DVB-T terrestrial TV standard. The hybrid support enables consumers to leverage the benefits of digital TV where it is available and still get free, desired analog content where DVB-T reception is less robust or not available, or when watching cable input. In countries where DVB-T deployment is imminent, Topstar’s designs enable analog TV access now and digital TV in the near future.
For OEMs, the hybrid TV support significantly expands market reach. DVB-T is the world’s most commonly deployed digital terrestrial broadcast technology, with existing deployment in more than 35 markets and a total of 100 countries committed to implementing the standard. And, with analog broadcast TV standards still available to more than 85% of the world’s population in 2012, Topstar’s hybrid PC TV designs enable the largest market footprint for customers interested in using their PC to watch live free-to-air television.
Based on Telegent’s TLG2300 PC TV technology
Topstar’s hybrid PC TV designs are based on Telegent’s TLG2300, the PC TV industry’s first single-chip hybrid TV tuner delivering DVB-T, worldwide analog TV and FM stereo support in a high-performance, small, low-power solution that integrates the RF tuner, demodulator, decoder and a high-speed USB bridge. The TLG2300 is available in both USB dongle and embedded half-mini PCIe card TV tuner implementations.
Weijie Yun, president and CEO of Telegent Systems, commented, “Embedded PC TV designs will help accelerate adoption of PC TV worldwide. Our collaboration with Topstar will enable manufacturers and consumers to benefit from this technology breakthrough.”
