By Sisvel, PRNE
November 15th, 2009
All Owners of Essential LTE/SAE Patents Invited to Participate
STUTTGART, Germany, November 16 - Sisvel today announced that it will hold a two-day meeting of LTE (Long
Term Evolution) / SAE (System Architecture Evolution) essential patent owners
beginning on February 2, 2010, to discuss the formation of an LTE/SAE patent
pool. Participants will include global technology leaders in the
telecommunications industry and major international LTE/SAE stakeholders, and
the meeting remains open to additional parties that hold an LTE essential
patent or patent application as determined by an independent patent
evaluator. All parties interested in participating in the formation of an
LTE/SAE patent pool are invited to contact Sisvel as soon as possible to
arrange an evaluation of essentiality in advance of the February meeting. To
ensure completion of the evaluation in time to join the February meeting,
patent owners should submit a patent no later than December 15, 2009.
Sisvel has expanded the scope of its LTE/SAE call for patents beyond the
initial list of Radio Access Specifications covered by the 36 series to
include those specifications related to EPS (Evolved Packet System) which
were developed in parallel with the radio access technology, as well as those
specifications of release 8 needed to complete an LTE/SAE system. A full list
of the relevant specifications is available from Sisvel upon request to the
following address: LTE@sisvel.com.
"By bringing together a broad group of LTE/SAE essential patent owners
from across the globe, Sisvel is promoting an open process to move towards a
transparent and efficient joint-licensing program for LTE/SAE," noted General
Richard I. Neal, President of Sisvel US. "We have already made the patent
evaluation process more efficient, with independent experts engaged in the
U.S., Europe, Japan, Korea, and China at standard rates equivalent to
approximately euro 5,000 — well below the cost of evaluation in some other
pools."
The February 2010 pool facilitation meeting follows Sisvel's explorative
work with the telecommunications industry. "The timing of our facilitation
meeting is consistent with our view that an LTE/SAE pool should be structured
to encourage the broadest participation possible," explained Giustino de
Sanctis, Managing Director of Sisvel Germany. "Sisvel is announcing this
facilitation meeting in advance to give all LTE/SAE stakeholders ample
opportunity to have a seat at the table."
About LTE/SAE
LTE (Long Term Evolution) is the evolution of 3GPP standards for land
mobile communications. It will provide higher transmission rates and enhanced
user experience, primarily with high speed data services. SAE (System
Architecture Evolution) is the enhancement of Packet Switched technology to
cope with rapid growth in IP traffic. LTE/SAE form the basis of 3GPP Release
8 specification set.
