LONDON -
The heightened emphasis on automotive safety and convenience together with growing concerns over emissions will bolster the adoption of electric parking brakes (EPB) in passenger cars and light commercial vehicles across Europe. The market will surge thanks to the rising demand for advanced braking systems that are poised for commercial launch after 2010 to 2012.

New analysis from Frost & Sullivan (www.automotive.frost.com), European Passenger Cars and Light Commercial Vehicles Market for Electric Parking Brakes, finds that the market earned revenues of euro 384.0 million in 2008 and estimates this to reach euro 615.0 million in 2015. The research covers the following technologies: cable puller and caliper integrated EPB systems for passenger cars and light commercial vehicles.
“The increasing focus on technologies that comply with safety and emission norms will boost market prospects,” notes Frost & Sullivan Research Analyst Sandeep Chandrasekaran. “The continuing shift towards comfort features will also drive the installation of EPBs in passenger cars and light commercial vehicles.”
EU norms on minimising carbon footprints have motivated OEMs to develop systems or components that enable weight reduction. This opens the market up for EPBs, positioning them to replace mechanical linkages and associated components. The growing need for advanced safety and comfort features is facilitating the adoption of EPBs across vehicle segments. OEMs and suppliers are investing in technologies that offer higher potential in terms of integrating parking brakes with service brakes.
“Since consumers are not interested in paying extra for EPB, OEMs are looking at cost-effective EPB solutions that can be offered as a standard fit in their model line-ups,” explains Chandrasekaran. “However, with the introduction of advanced braking systems, EPB is likely to be integrated in a limited manner into electronic braking systems.”
Suppliers should look at developing EPB systems that can be shared across platforms. Their primary focus should be on cost benefits and integration potential.
“As they focus on cost benefits, cable puller EPB manufacturers should also keep track of advances in caliper integrated EPB technology to counter any potential market challenges,” advises Chandrasekaran. “OEMs and suppliers must regard EPB systems not only as a comfort feature but also as a key safety feature demanded by customers.”
