FRANKFURT, Germany - Aircraft Movements Improve Slightly
- FRA’s Flight Punctuality Hits Record 86.8 Percent
The global economic crisis continues to have a firm grip on international air transportation. However, Frankfurt Airport’s (FRA) percentage change in passenger figures in March compared to February 2009 did not worsen. In February 2009 FRA experienced a 9.8 percent year-on year drop in passenger traffic, taking into account the leap-year effect; in March 2009 FRA served 9.2 percent fewer passengers. A total of 4.03 million passengers used FRA in the reporting month. Aircraft movements slipped by 3.2 percent to 38,913 takeoffs and landings. In February 2009 movements dropped by 6.1 percent, even after adjusting for the leap-year effect. With 152,784 metric tons of airfreight and airmail in March 2009, FRA experienced a 21.2 percent year-on-year decline in cargo. In February 2009 FRA registered a 25.4 percent fall in cargo traffic.
Cumulative figures for the first quarter of 2009 show that FRA welcomed 10.9 million passengers, a decline of 10.9 percent compared to the same period last year. Aircraft movements were down by 6.5 percent during the same period to 108,754 takeoffs and landings. Cargo volume sank by 23.3 percent to 406,954 metric tons.
Fraport’s majority-owned airports continued to report positive results in March 2009. Antalya Airport on the Turkish Riviera (AYT) saw passenger traffic rise by 11 percent and Lima Airport (LIM) in Peru by 1.8 percent. On the Black Sea coast, traffic at Varna Airport (VAR) increased by 163 percent and at Burgas Airport (BOJ) by 1.7 percent, due to lower passenger volumes in the winter season. Thus, these foreign operations enabled the Fraport Group’s airports - including FRA - to register a correspondingly moderate 6.3 percent dip in passenger traffic. The cumulative first quarter 2009 figures also reflect the positive influence of Fraport’s foreign airports: AYT reported a passenger surge of 12.8 percent and Lima of 5.4 percent. Passenger traffic at BOJ jumped by 30.5 percent and at VAR by 14.2 percent during the January-to-March 2009 period.
Flight punctuality a FRA (the share of punctual arrivals and departures) developed positively again in March 2009. Improving by more than 15 percentage points from 71.1 percent in March 2008 to 86.8 percent in the reporting month, punctuality can be partly attributed to the lower traffic volume. However, a major contributing factor here is FRA’s strong operational performance achieved through optimization initiatives in partnership with air traffic control and the airlines.

Despite the economic and financial crisis, which has considerably depressed world air traffic since the end of 2008, Fraport AG realized a profit for the first quarter of 2009: Unadjusted Group revenue fell by 14.4 percent year-on-year to EUR452 million. However, adjusted for consolidation effects, revenue decline was only 1.5 percent.
