LONDON - Over 300 senior executives attended the annual Harvey Nash “Digby lecture” this year, to hear Lord Digby Jones talk about his experience at the top of UK business and government. Interim management professional Clive Sexton, Director of Impact Executives, summarises the highlights of the fifth annual lecture. The agenda included challenges to UK competitiveness in the new world economy, leadership, skills and training, and the role of government in business.
“Sir” Digby became “Lord” Digby when he was appointed Minister of State for Trade in 2007 and is one of the most full throated supporters of UK business. He began his speech by commenting on the disconnection between individual MPs and political leaders and the voters.
Digby commented on his time spent in government as a GOAT appointee, and his biggest complaint was the lack of real-world experience of those who want to govern. To effectively manage the fifth largest economy in the world, the net needs to be cast wider.
Turning to the global economy, Digby addressed key opportunities and challenges around the world. Whilst he praised Obama’s leadership in the US, he suggested that China is the biggest hope for a quick recovery from the recession. As their buying power grows, so will the demand for products imported from other countries. He also commended the successes of the European Union.
Digby concluded that knowledge is the solution to business success. A highly skilled, flexible workforce is what defines British business. Individuals should take the opportunity to retrain and take a leading role in the global economy.
