- Market-leading columnar, MPP analytic DBMS chosen to reduce cost of data warehousing terabytes of retail data in North America and Europe
Contemporary apparel and consumer products manufacturer Guess?, Inc. has selected the Vertica Analytic Database to help the rapidly growing company analyze dozens of terabytes of point-of-sale (POS), manufacturing, inventory, customer and store performance data in several global data centers.
“Retail moves at lightning speed so we needed a high-performance analytics platform that could handle our fast-paced requirement for information,” said Mike Relich, CIO, Guess?, Inc. “After looking at several alternatives we selected Vertica because it simply delivers the answers the business needs in record time and at much lower cost than the other databases and appliances we evaluated.”
Guess?, Inc. selected the Vertica Analytic Database after evaluating a competing, appliance-based solution, as well as its incumbent one-size-fits-all database management system. The Vertica Analytic Database has a unique columnar, MPP architecture and pioneering data compression to reduce storage requirements by as much as 90 percent, dramatically cutting hardware overhead and energy consumption so companies can analyze larger amounts of data at a fraction of the cost. It can operate directly on that compressed data, delivering query results 50 to 200 times faster than other databases. Guess?, Inc. will run the Vertica Analytic Database in conjunction with front-end business intelligence tools from MicroStrategy and BusinessObjects.
Guess?, Inc.’s selection of the Vertica Analytic Database reflects the retail market’s growing interest in database analytics as reported by research group IDC. IDC predicted in August 2009 that spending for retail demand intelligence (RDI) and analytics applications, pegged at US$234 million in 2007, will grow nearly 13 percent globally yearly through 2011.
“More customers in more vertical markets are discovering the benefits of our combined columnar/MPP database software, and retail is emerging as a key beneficiary of the analytic agility Vertica-based teramarts deliver,” said Ralph Breslauer, President and CEO, Vertica Systems. “Guess?, Inc. is definitely ahead of the curve in the area of customer analytics, and we are excited to be part of their ground-breaking data warehousing and business intelligence platform.”
