- Keep Britain Tidy Blasts Lager Company
A lager company which branded England’s beaches “dirty and rubbish ridden” has been criticised by Keep Britain Tidy.
Corona, a Mexican lager, laid into traditional English resorts claiming Britons would much rather holiday abroad.
It even labelled Blackpool: “Britain’s most hated beach.”
Phil Barton from Keep Britain Tidy said: “Whoever came up with the idea to criticise our beautiful coastline is misguided and ill-informed.
“England’s beaches offer a great opportunity to people looking for a low-cost, stress-free way of taking a break in the coming months”.
“Far from people travelling abroad this summer, we firmly believe people will holiday at home. Forget Mexico and choose Margate or Morecambe because our beaches are in great shape.”
“England’s beaches achieved 72 Blue Flags and 113 Quality Coast Awards this year in recognition of their high quality environments and facilities.”
Keep Britain Tidy believes that beaches in England are working hard to improve standards. Blackpool, for instance, has won a Quality Coast Award this year and is moving in the right direction.
Mr Barton added: “For Corona to brand Blackpool ‘Britain’s most hated beach’ is grossly unfair. Holidaying in this country in places like Blackpool is the perfect way of saving money and having a great time.”
“Instead of worrying about exchange rates, baggage handlers or forgetting passports, we’re urging people in England to make the most of their own magnificent coastline. “
“We are glad that Corona is highlighting the litter problem and says it wants to preserve the world’s beaches. We are keen to work with them on this - but we feel they are going about it in the wrong way.”
