September 22nd, 2009 MUMBAI - Telecommunications provider Reliance Infratel, promoted by Reliance Communications and part of the R-ADA group, will come out with an initial public offer to the tune of 10 percent of its paid-up equity capital, group chairman Anil Ambani said here Tuesday. Addressing shareholders at Reliance Communication's annual general meeting here, Ambani said the draft red herring prospectus for the issue would be filed by group company Reliance Power with market regulator Securities and Exchange Board of India.

September 17th, 2009 NEW DELHI - Telecom major Aircel has signed a $400-million tower sharing agreement with Datacom Solutions, part of the Videocon group, the companies said Thursday. According to the deal, Datacom, which holds a licence to roll out mobile telecom services but is yet to launch operations, can use at least 5,000 Aircel towers for 16 months.

September 17th, 2009 MUMBAI - Infrastructure equipment company Quippo Telecom Infrastructure has bagged a contract from Delhi International Airport Ltd (DIAL) to provide WiMax connectivity at the airport's Terminal 3. The under-construction terminal of the Indira Gandhi International airport will have WiMax and Wi-Fi technologies with the help of Quippo and Ericsson, DIAL said in a regulatory statement.

"The DoT (Department of Telecommunications) is considering implementing a uniform licence fee," said Telecom Secretary Siddhartha Behura at a conference organised by the Internet Service Providers Association of India.

July 22nd, 2009 NEW DELHI - Etisalat DB, a joint venture between Dubai-based telecom major Etisalat and Mumbai's Dynamix Balwas group (DB), and the Anil Ambani-promoted telephony operator Reliance Communications (RCom), have entered into an agreement to share infrastructure for 10 years, a RCom statement said Wednesday. The agreement, which will enable Etisalat DB to share tower and transmission infrastructure owned by RCom and sister company Reliance Infratel, is expected to increase RCom's revenues by Rs.10,000 crore ($2.2 billion), the company said in the statement.

June 24th, 2009 NEW DELHI - Tata DoCoMo, the joint venture between telecom majors Tata Teleservices and NTT DoCoMo of Japan, commercially launched GSM telephony operations in Chennai and Tamil Nadu circles Wednesday. Tata DoCoMo's pan-India service rollout will be completed this year, with entire south Indian circles going "live" in a fortnight, it said in a statement.

June 11th, 2009 NEW DELHI - Leading telecom operator Tata Teleservices Wednesday launched mobile services on the GSM platform under the Tata DoCoMo brand, saying it will invest $2 billion (Rs.9,450 crore) for its pan-India rollout. The company, in which Japan's NTT DoCoMo has 26 percent stake, has received GSM spectrum for 18 out of the country's 22 telecom circles.

A BSNL statement said the wireless broadband initiative would spread the expansion of broadband connections in the country.

February 26th, 2009 NEW DELHI - The government Wednesday said it has accepted the telecom regulator's proposal to allow companies to offer mobile phone services without owning network infrastructure or spectrum. The government decision would pave the way for foreign and Indian companies to set up mobile virtual network operators (MVNO) in India which can roll out wireless telecom services by renting spectrum and networks from existing telecom companies.

February 2nd, 2009 NEW DELHI - Minister of State for Communications and IT Jyotiraditya Scindia Tuesday said the government has accepted the calling card proposal, which would offer flexibility to consumers to choose their carrier for making long-distance calls. 'The calling cards for both STD and ISD calls have been accepted, making it flexible for consumers to switch their carriers for long distance calls,' Scindia said at a conference here.
