Wash. teachers approve contract, head back to work

SEATTLE — Teachers in Washington state’s fourth-largest school district have approved a new contract and are heading back to the classroom.

The Kent Education Association says teachers overwhelmingly approved the contract Monday with a 94 percent “yes” vote.

Spokesman Dale Folkerts says teachers will spend Monday preparing for school and students will be back in class Tuesday.

The new contract makes some reductions in class size, increases the time teachers spend with students, limits administrative meetings and gives teachers a raise.

The district’s 1,700 teachers have been on strike for 18 days.
