US Muslims praise Obama speech, wait for action

CHICAGO — American Muslims are praising President Barack Obama’s first speech addressing Muslims worldwide as a much-needed step in the right direction.

Many rose early Thursday or stayed up all night to watch the broadcast live from Cairo University.

Syed Mehdi (SAY’-ehd MEH’-dee) was at Chicago’s Flaming Wok’n Grill where a handful of Muslims gathered to discuss. He says a single speech won’t make things better for Muslims, but he says he thinks Obama is trying to build bridges.

The speech pertained as much to the millions of U.S. Muslims as it did to those abroad.

Obama emphasized Muslims’ importance in American history. He also talked about the ability to pay zakat (ZUH’-kaht), which is an Islamic obligation to donate to charity, at a time when many Islamic charities are being investigated for ties to terrorists.
