US and Cuban diplomats hold second meeting

WASHINGTON — The State Department says a senior U.S. diplomat will meet for the second time this month with the top Cuban government representative in Washington.

State Department spokesman Robert A. Wood says Monday’s meeting is intended to air U.S. concerns about Cuban government restrictions on civil liberties and to talk about President Barack Obama’s recent decision to end U.S. limits on Cuban-Americans’ travel to Cuba to visit relatives.

Wood said Monday’s session, following a similar meeting on April 13, does not amount to a new initiative to improve relations. He said such meetings are held periodically when either side wants to raise an issue with the other.

Representing the U.S. will be Thomas Shannon, Jr., the assistant secretary of state for Western Hemisphere Affairs. He will meet with Jorge Bolanos, the head of the Cuban interests section in Washington.
