Tunisia rejects Gitmo inmate mistreatment fears

TUNIS, Tunisia — Tunisia condemned fears that Tunisians jailed at the U.S. military prison at Guantanamo Bay would be at risk of ill-treatment if they are sent back to their native country.

Some rights groups have worried 10 Tunisians still held by the U.S. military at Guantanamo would face torture if they are returned to Tunisia, a tourism haven also known for police keeping a tight grip on society.

Tunisia’s Justice Ministry said Thursday that such allegations aren’t grounded and “aim at justifying the transfer of (Tunisian nationals) to certain European countries.”

President Barack Obama wants to close Guantanamo by the end of 2009. Tunisian lawyer Samir Ben Amor says Italy and Germany are discussing the possible transfer of Tunisian inmates.
