Tuesday’s election saw highest voting in Haryana

October 14th, 2009 NEW DELHI - The Election Commission Wednesday ordered re-poll in two stations and adjourned voting in 22 others in Maharashtra after Tuesdays assembly elections. The re-poll has been ordered at one station each in Nagpur and Ichalkaranji constituencies.

October 14th, 2009 CHANDIGARH - The Election Commission of India Wednesday ordered re-poll in one polling station in Haryana following Tuesday's voting for the 90-member assembly. The re-poll has been ordered at polling station No.127 (Government Primary School) in village Karora of Pundri assembly constituency in district Kaithal.

October 13th, 2009 CHANDIGARH - About 18 percent of Haryana's 13 million electorate had cast their votes in the first four hours of polling for elections to the 90-member assembly Thursday. The Pehowa assembly seat near Kurukshetra saw the highest turnout of 25 percent till 11 a.m.

October 13th, 2009 CHANDIGARH - Amid stray incidents of violence, including a poll agent being killed, over 36 percent of Haryana's 13 million electorate cast their votes in the first six hours of polling for elections to the 90-member assembly Tuesday. Bawani Khera assembly seat near Bhiwani saw the highest turnout of 49 percent till 1 p.m.

October 12th, 2009 CHANDIGARH - Poll officials and security personnel readied for duty, many educational institutions closed early for Diwali and bars shut down as Haryana Monday readied for the assembly elections with both the ruling Congress and the main opposition parties confident of victory. Voting for the 90-member assembly polls will take place Tuesday from 7 a.m.

October 11th, 2009 NEW DELHI - The campaigning for Tuesday's assembly polls in Maharashtra, Haryana and Arunachal Pradesh ended Sunday evening with the Election Commission directing state officers to ensure that no canvassing takes place till voting time. "The commission has directed the Chief Electoral Officers of Arunachal Pradesh, Haryana and Maharashtra to ensure that after the closure of campaign period, no canvassing takes place within the constituencies," the Election Commission said in a release here.

October 7th, 2009 CHANDIGARH - The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Wednesday said the controversial issue of sharing of water between Haryana and Punjab should be sorted out through talks. The water sharing has been a thorny issue between both states with Haryana seeking completion of the Sutlej-Yamuna Link (SYL) canal and Punjab opposing the move.

October 7th, 2009 AMBALA - Prime Minister Manmohan Singh spent 20 minutes at an election rally here Wednesday listing the achievements of the Congress government in Haryana led by Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda. Looking relaxed in his white kurta-pajama and trademark light-blue turban, Manmohan Singh exhorted people in Haryana to vote for the Congress again in the Oct 13 assembly elections.

October 2nd, 2009 CHANDIGARH - Over 13.1 million electors will decide the fate of 1,222 candidates in the election to the 90-member Haryana assembly to be held Oct 13. Haryana's Chief Electoral Officer Sajjan Singh said Friday that out of the total voters 7,147,100 were male while and 5,965,911 were female voters.

September 5th, 2009 CHANDIGARH - The Election Commission (EC) on Saturday visited Haryana and met leaders of various political parties to review arrangements being made prior to the Haryana Assembly elections scheduled to be held on October 13. Chief Election Commissioner Navin Chawla, Election Commissioner S Y Quraishi and Assistant Election Commissioner Alok Shukla met leaders of Congress, Bharatiya Janata Party, Communist Party of India(M), Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD)and Indian National Lok Dal (INLD).

August 31st, 2009 NEW DELHI - Assembly polls in the three Congress-ruled states of Maharashtra, Haryana and Arunachal Pradesh will be held simultaneously Oct 13, the Election Commission announced Monday. The counting of votes will take place nine days later, Chief Election Commissioner Navin Chawla told reporters here.

May 7th, 2009 CHANDIGARH - Haryana recorded nearly 39 percent voting while parts of Punjab recorded nearly 35 percent turnout till mid-day Thursday. After a sluggish start in the morning, voters kept trickling into polling stations across Haryana, bringing the turnout to a decent 39 percent by 1 p.m.

May 7th, 2009 CHANDIGARH - Voting in Haryana got off to a sluggish start Thursday, but more voters turned out in four parliamentary seats of adjoining Punjab. Election department officials here said 13 percent voter turnout had been recorded by 10 a.m.

February 27th, 2009 CHANDIGARH - Over 11.9 million voters of Haryana will now have their photographs printed on the electoral rolls of the state, giving it the distinction of becoming the first state in the country to publish the entire voters' lists with photographs. 'A 100 percent in photo electoral rolls in Haryana has been achieved with the constant and sincere efforts by Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) and Haryana Electronics Development Corporation (Hartron) during the last one year.
