large_tropical_storm_erika_sevenpm1Florida- Ida which was feared to be a tropical storm on Wednesday has already gained strength to become a hurricane. Ida has unleashed heavy rains as it neared Nicaragua’s coast early Thursday. It could trigger a devastating landslides in a few hours, as told by forecasters.

Ida, the ninth named storm of the Atlantic hurricane season, was first reported on the afternoon of 4th November, and the centre of the tropical storm was located about 100 kilometers off the main port of Nicaragua Bluefield.

The maximum sustainable speed estimated was 65 mph. The storm is expected to weaken once it moves inland later Thursday, the center said.

Ida has uprooted trees, knocked down power lines, telephone poles and forced the evacuation of 300 people on Nicaragua’s Corn Island.
People were rescued from poorly constructed, mostly wooden homes and they had to spent the night in offices of the port authority, the navy and some hotels, as told by Reinaldo Carrion, the civil defense chief in Bluefields.

Storm warnings will remain in effect for the entire eastern coast of Nicaragua while the Colombian islands of San Andres and Providencia are now on the safe-side, according to the Meteorologists.
