LUCKNOW - Hundreds of enthusiasts of the traditional ‘Tonga Race’ had a gala time here on Sunday as they enjoyed watching the annual horse cart race.

The State capital of Uttar Pradesh, Lucknow, is also described as the City of Nawabs and known for legendary royal pursuits like game hunting, delightful gourmets, creative and performing arts and varied other recreations, literally relived the memories of the past, courtesy the ‘Tonga Race’.

The race, which is a part of the city’s royal heritage, enthralled people converging here from across the state, as they enjoyed watching the horse carts race which covered a distance of five kilometres.

“This is a tradition which is being followed for ages and we celebrate it even today. It sees huge participation, some even indulging in betting,” said Vinod, a local enthusiast of ‘Tonga Race’.

Organisers of the horst cart race said that in the last few decades, the number of participants has been on the rise, especially due to the youngsters showing deep interest in the competition.

“If the horses become unruly, it is out of the race. Against all such odds, we participate with an eager wish to win the race,” said Alok Yadav, a participant.

It was a joy for the people in the audience to watch the participating tonga owners and drivers with their horses decorated with colourful feathers and harnessing aids.

For hundreds of spectators, who cheered the participants, it was a fun-filled evening worth remembering through out the year. By Kamna Mathur (ANI)
