Toronto mayor says he won’t run

TORONTO — The mayor of Canada’s largest city says he won’t run for a third term in office.

Toronto Mayor David Miller had previously said he would run again but his popularity plummeted following a 39-day strike by municipal employees that halted garbage collection and other services this past summer.

Critics say the labor-friendly mayor gave too much to city workers when he settled the strike.

Miller said Friday he’s not seeking re-election because he wants to spend more time with his family and because he has accomplished what he set out to do.

The Harvard-educated veteran of Toronto politics became mayor in 2003. He says he upgraded the transit system and made progress on the environment and crime.

Miller still has 15 months left in his term.
