Adviser describes Obama’s condolences to Karzai

WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama’s national security adviser says the United States expressed great sympathy over the loss of life after a bombing in Afghanistan that officials said killed dozens of civilians.

Retired Marine Corps Gen. James Jones said Obama told Afghanistan President Hamid Karzai about the U.S. regrets in their meeting Wednesday and Karzai was moved by the statement of condolences.

Jones said the United States will try to determine what happened in Monday’s bombing and tried to ensure that it doesn’t occur again.

Earlier, Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton told Karzai that the Obama administration “deeply, deeply” regretted the loss of civilian lives.
