Three poverty-stricken sisters commit suicide

September 29th, 2009 CHANDIGARH - Police Tuesday registered a case against a middle-aged couple here for attempting to commit suicide by swallowing some poisonous substance. A police official said Varinder Jain and his wife Shashi Jain, who run a departmental store in Sector 19 and stay in a flat above the shop, were booked for attempting suicide by eating a poisonous substance, probably sulfas tablets.

September 4th, 2009 LUCKNOW - A poverty-stricken man killed his wife and two teenaged daughters in Uttar Pradesh's Azamgarh district Friday, police said. Awadh Narayan (37), of Debgaon village in the district, attacked his wife Santara (35) and two daughters aged 13 and 15 years with an axe, killing them on the spot, they said.

August 3rd, 2009 CHANDIGARH - Extending a special gesture to women whose brothers are spending time in jails across the state, the Punjab government Monday announced that sisters will be allowed to tie rakhis to their imprisoned brothers Wednesday.
