Telecom Italia 1H down 17 percent

MILAN — Telecom Italia SpA says first-half net profit dropped 17 percent from a year earlier because of a shrinking customer base, lower handset sales and regulations limiting termination fees on mobile phones.

Italy’s largest telecommunication operator said Thursday that net profit in the period that ended June 30 was euro964 million ($1.38 billion), compared with a restated euro1.1 billion a year earlier.

First-half revenue was euro13.9 billion, down 6 percent from euro14.8 billion in the same period of 2008.

The company says its fixed-line customer base shrank by 1.2 million accesses, while shrinking mobile phone customer base resulted in lower handset sales. The loss of revenue streams was partially offset by the growth in broadband service, which grew 12 percent in fixed-line and 23 percent for mobile phones.

The company did not release quarterly data.
