Taiwan chipmaker UMC returns to profit in Q2

TAIPEI, Taiwan — Taiwan’s United Microelectronics Corp., the world’s second-largest contract chipmaker by revenue, on Wednesday posted its first quarterly profit in a year on stronger customer demand.

The company’s net income was NT$1.55 billion ($47 million) for the April-June quarter, down 35.5 percent from a year earlier.

Chief Executive Sun Shih-wei told investors that UMC’s revenue in June exceeded revenue in the same month last year, raising prospects for improved third quarter results.

He did not provide specific figures.

Wafer shipments rose substantially in the second quarter, he said.

Sun said he expects wafer shipments to grow by 8 to 10 percent in the third quarter from the 898,000 eight inch-equivalent wafers shipped during April-June.

The UMC statement said its second quarter revenue was NT$22.63 billion, down 10.3 percent from NT$25.24 billion a year earlier.
