Swat offensive to conclude only when extremism is rooted out : Zardari

August 22nd, 2009 BEIJING - Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari has supported China's policies in its insurgency hit Xinjiang region. Zardari, who arrived here on Friday on a four day visit, said Islamabad endorses China's policies in the riot hit Xinjiang region, where nearly 200 people were killed in ethnic riots between Muslim Uighurs and Han Chinese residents.

July 2nd, 2009 ISLAMABAD - Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari has said that the military offensive against the Taliban would continue until all the extremists are rooted out from the country. "The fight against militancy and terrorism will end with the complete elimination of militants," Zardari said during a meeting with Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani and Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Ashfaq Kayani here.

July 1st, 2009 ISLAMABAD - While the Pakistan government has been claiming that the Swat military offensive has been successful and nearing its end, a former Pakistan Air Force (PAF) top official, Air Marshal (retired) Masood Akhter has raised questions over the claims by saying that people shouldn't be fooled through such statements. During a discussion on 'Post-Swat Operation Outlook' here, Akhter said people should not hope that the war against terrorism and the extremist threat would end within a few weeks.

July 1st, 2009 ISLAMABAD - The United States has said it would establish its own monitoring system to keep a check on the entire financial aid package being offered to Pakistan. Sources said David Lipton, Senior Director for International Economics, National Security Council of USA, during his recent visit to Pakistan, met Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani's Adviser on Financial Affairs, Shaukat Tarin, and told him about the monitoring cell.

June 24th, 2009 BRUSSELS - Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari has said that India is no longer a military threat to Pakistan, rather it is the Taliban which is threatening peace in the region as well as in the whole world. Talking to a private television channel ahead of the first summit between the European Union (EU) and Pakistan here, Zardari said both India and Pakistan do not have any ill-feelings against each other, and both the countries have good intentions.

June 13th, 2009 LAHORE - Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari has said that former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto was killed because she challenged the writ of the Taliban. In a television address to the nation, Zardari said Bhutto's loss has made him realize the pain of families who have been a victim of terrorism.

US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton rejected Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari's claims that Washington has failed to deliver on its promises to help Pakistan deal with issues arising out of the Swat military operation and the exodus of thousands.

May 26th, 2009 LAHORE - Former Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf has said that extremism poses the biggest threat to Pakistan. In an interview to a private TV channel, Musharraf claimed that Islamabad has taken several steps to thwart extremism, and criticism in this regard was baseless.

April 27th, 2009 LAHORE - Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari has said the government would be compelled to review its stand on the Swat peace deal and the Nizam-e-Adl Regulation if the people of the region opined the accord has failed to establish peace. "When the people of Swat feel there is no peace even after the regulation, then the provincial government, assembly and the parliament can give their opinion on this issue," The Daily Times quoted Zardari, as saying.
