In water since 1911, Coney Island bell retrieved

NEW YORK — A 500-pound brass bell that sank to the ocean floor in a 1911 fire has been pulled out of the water off Coney Island.

The 3-foot-by-3-foot bell sat on the pier during the amusement park’s heyday. It was rung whenever passengers left or arrived by steamboat.

Commercial diver Gene Ritter discovered the bell in about 25 feet of water in November. The artifact was recovered Thursday.

Ritter says, “It still sounds good.”

The bell will be refurbished by the Coney Island History Project. A permanent home for it will eventually be found nearby.

The bell’s inscription, “James Gregory, NY, 1885,” is still visible. Gregory was a trapeze artist with the Gregory Brothers Circus that performed at Coney Island.
