Strong quake jolts Alaska

September 30th, 2009 A massive earthquake with a magnitude of 7.9 has reportedly struck the region of Western Indonesia on Wednesday thereby causing serious damage to the properties. According to the US Geological Survey, the quake was recorded to have struck at about 33 miles from the city of Padang.

May 16th, 2009 WELLINGTON - A strong earthquake measuring 6.7 on the Richter scale Saturday jolted the Kermadec Islands in New Zealand, officials said. The quake occurred at 0053 GMT, 830 km northeast of Auckland, the New Zealand Institute of Geological and Nuclear Sciences reported.

April 16th, 2009 JAKARTA - An earthquake measuring 6.4 on the Richter scale Thursday jolted the western parts of Indonesia, the meteorology agency said. The quake occurred at 3.01 a.m., with its epicentre 32 km southwest of Mentawai island in Sumatra province, the agency said.

April 6th, 2009 ROME - At least 13 people, including four children, were killed Monday in a strong earthquake in central Italy, TV channels reported. The earthquake with a magnitude of 6.3 rocked central Italy early Monday, damaging buildings in the town of Aquila, where the epicentre was located, some 95 km northeast of Rome.

April 4th, 2009 JAKARTA - An earthquake measuring 6.5 on the Richter scale Saturday jolted the eastern part of Indonesia, the meteorology and disaster management agencies said. The quake occurred at 0541 GMT, with the epicentre 117 km northeast of North Sulawesi and 10 km under the seabed, an official said.

February 14th, 2009 TOKYO - A powerful earthquake hit northern Japan Sunday, the Japan Meteorological Agency said. The 6.0 magnitude quake took place at 6.24 p.m., with the epicenter about 40 km under the sea off Iwate prefecture.

January 27th, 2009 HONG KONG - An earthquake measuring 6.0 on the Richter scale Wednesday jolted the southern part of Sumatra Island in Indonesia, the Hong Kong Observatory reported. The quake occurred at 08.07 a.m.

January 9th, 2009 SAN JOSE - The toll in Costa Rica's 6.2 magnitude quake has risen to 10, EFE reported. Officials said the most affected regions are near the epicentre of the quake near a mountainous region in the central part of Costa Rica.

January 8th, 2009 SAN JOSE - A powerful earthquake measuring 6.2 on the Richter scale rocked northern Costa Rica late Thursday night, but there were no reports of any casualty, EFE news agency reported Friday. The epicentre of the quake was near Poas volcano in Alajuela province, about 60 km northwest of San Jose, said Juan Segura, the head of Costa Rica's Ovisicori Seismology Institute.

January 5th, 2009 MEXICO CITY - An earthquake measuring 5.6 on the Richter scale shook the south of the Baja California peninsula in northern Mexico Monday, although no injuries or damage were reported. Mexico's National Earthquake Service said the epicentre of the quake, which happened at 4.59 a.m., was 115 km northeast of San Jose del Cabo, a major tourist destination.

January 3rd, 2009 PESHAWAR - An earthquake measuring 5.9 on the Richter scale jolted northwestern Pakistan Sunday morning, but there was no report of casualty or damage to property, according to a media report. The quake hit the North West Frontier Province bordering Afghanistan at around 12:50 a.m.

December 26th, 2008 WELLINGTON - An earthquake measuring 5.1 on the Richter scale struck New Zealand's capital Wellington Saturday morning, the Geological department said. The epicentre of the quake, which occurred at around 9 a.m., was at 80 km north of Wellington and at a depth of 50 km below the surface, according to the Institute of Geological and Nuclear Sciences.

December 22nd, 2008 BEIJING - An earthquake measuring 5.2 on the Richter scale struck southwest Taiwan Tuesday morning, the earthquake network centre of China said. The quake hit Kaohsiung county at around 8:04 a.m.
