State Government declares Manipur drought-hit

October 15th, 2009 IMPHAL - Normal life in Manipur came to a standstill on Thursday following a general strike called by the Manipur People's Liberation Front (MPLF). The MPLF is an umbrella forum formed by major insurgent groups operating in the state.

September 12th, 2009 IMPHAL - Three paramilitary troopers were killed Saturday in an ambush by separatists in Manipur, police said. Heavily armed militants belonging to the People's Liberation Army (PLA) opened indiscriminate fire on a convoy of the Border Security Force (BSF) near village Oksu, 20 km east of Imphal, a police spokesperson said.

August 26th, 2009 JAIPUR - The Rajasthan Government has declared 26 districts in the State as drought-hit. According to sources, the state government, after considering crop assessment report of collectors of 33 districts, issued a notification to this effect.

August 22nd, 2009 IMPHAL - Defying a ban regional Manipur Peoples Party (MPP) here on Saturday and staged a protest over the issue of killing of a pregnant woman and a suspected militant, allegedly by Manipur's police commandos. Manipur has been witnessing a series of protests since the shootout on July 23, near the building of the State legislature in Imphal in which five others were also injured.

August 10th, 2009 PATNA - The Bihar Government has declared 26 districts in the State as drought-hit. The decision was taken at the cabinet meeting today.

August 8th, 2009 MUMBAI - The Maharashtra Government has declared drought-like situation in 129 tehsils in the State. According to an official release, there has been less than 50 per cent of the normal rainfall and scarcity of water and fodder this year.

August 6th, 2009 NEW DELHI - Cabinet Secretary K M Chandrasekhar will meet the Chief Secretaries of all States and Union Territories here on Saturday to discuss the drought situation. The meeting will review the requirements of the States and Union Territories that have deficient rainfall and draw up an action plan to meet the situation.

July 25th, 2009 LUCKNOW - The Uttar Pradesh Government will declare 20 districts in the state as drought-hit. The decision was taken at a high-level meeting presided over by Chief Secretary A K Gupta on Friday night.

July 15th, 2009 GUWAHATI - The Assam Government has declared more than half of the state drought-hit, due to the lack of rain. According to officials, agriculture activity in the state has been badly hit due to scanty monsoon rains.

June 28th, 2009 NEW DELHI - Union Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar on Sunday said there is no drought-like situation in the country due to a delay in the onset of monsoon rains. "There is no drought-like situation in the country due to delay in monsoons and the loss would be more than made up for in the rains during July and August," Pawar said.

June 28th, 2009 IMPHAL - Migrant labourers of Bihar and West Bengal held a protest rally against the series of killings of labourers by militant groups in Manipur. Over 400 migrant labourers from various part of the state participated in the demonstration organised by the state unit of All India Trade Union Congress.
