Spurious liquor kills four in Orissa

July 28th, 2009 AHMEDABAD - Gujarat assembly on Tuesday introduced, Bombay Prohibition (Gujarat Amendment) Bill 2009, proposing stern punishment upto death penalty to deal with illicit liquor trade. The Bill was passed with a majority vote in the House.

July 23rd, 2009 KADAMPADI - Tamil Nadu police busted a factory making illicit liquor in Kadampadi village on Wednesday. The police seized spurious liquor worth 25 lakh rupees and arrested four persons running the racket here.

July 15th, 2009 AHMEDABAD - The Gujarat government on Wednesday declared that it would soon bring a new law having a provision to punish dealers of spurious liquor with seven years in imprisonment to capital punishment. The State government has come into action following wide uproar over the death of 152 people in Ahmedabad due to drinking illegally brewed liquor.

July 13th, 2009 AHMEDABAD - The hooch tragedy in Ahmedabad was caused by the mixing of a huge quantity of methyl alcohol with the spurious liquor, doctors have said. "Methanol, which is not for human consumption, was found in large quantity in the patients who were admitted to the civil hospital after consuming spurious liquor," Assistant administrator of civil hospital Dr Gautam Sharma said.

June 26th, 2009 BHUBANESWAR - At least six people died and nine others fell sick after allegedly consuming illicit liquor in Orissa's Bolangir district, an official said Friday. Some residents of Gondapali, Mundapali and Haladipada villages in Bolangir, 330 km from state capital Bhubaneswar, fell sick after consuming liquor Thursday night.

May 12th, 2009 NEW DELHI - Two men have been arrested for manufacturing the spurious liquor that caused death of over 30 people in the capital during the last two months, police said Tuesday. Raman, 32, and his younger brother Chaman, 30 - both residents of Gurgaon - were arrested by the special operations squad of the crime branch from Kapashera area Monday.

May 6th, 2009 NEW DELHI - A man, his wife and his mother have been arrested for allegedly supplying spurious liquor that caused the death of over 30 people in the last two months in the capital, police said Wednesday. Gautam alias Cheeku, 36, his wife Maya, 35, and mother Manjeet Kaur, 55, were arrested for supplying spurious country made liquor, which resulted in many deaths, mainly of labourers, in Dabri, Khyala and Rajouri Garden during March and April.
