Craft carrying circus tycoon reaches space station

KOROLYOV, Russia — A spacecraft carrying a Canadian circus tycoon and a two-man Russian-American crew has docked at the International Space Station.

Billionaire Cirque du Soleil founder Guy Laliberte is the seventh paying space tourist to visit the orbital station. The 50-year-old dubbed the first clown in space spent a reported $35 million for his voyage.

His children and partner Claudia Barilla broke into applause after watching the docking Friday on a giant screen at Russian mission control outside Moscow.

Laliberte made the two-day trip from Earth in a Soyuz craft along with Russian cosmonaut Maxim Surayev and U.S. astronaut Jeffrey Williams. They are to join the station’s current crew of six after the hatches are opened later Friday.
