Soldier killed in Jammu and Kashmir

October 10th, 2009 GUREZ - Army foiled an infiltration bid from across the border by killing two militants in Gurez Sector of Jammu and Kashmir this morning. According to sources, troops guarding the border noticed suspicious movement on the border.

September 25th, 2009 NEW DELHI - In view of the special status of State of Jammu and Kashmir, the Central Government has decided to establish, as a special dispensation, two appropriate Central Universities in the State - one in Jammu region and another in the Kashmir Valley. It is expected that this will meet the regional aspirations in the State.

September 7th, 2009 JAMMU - At least 15 people were killed and many others were missing when a bus in which they were travelling skidded off the road and fell into river Chenab in the mountainous Doda district of Jammu and Kashmir Monday afternoon, officials said. According to reports reaching here, the bus was on its way to Jammu from Doda when it skidded off the road and rolled down into the Chenab river at Assar, about 150 km north-east of Jammu.

September 1st, 2009 SRINAGAR - A soldier was killed in firing from across the border at a forward post along the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir's Poonch District in the wee hours on Tuesday, Army officials said. According to reports, the soldier has been identified as Lance Naik Dag Bahadur Gurung.

September 1st, 2009 JAMMU - An Indian Army soldier was killed in Jammu and Kashmir's Poonch district Tuesday when Pakistani troops fired from across the Line of Control (LoC), army officials here said. In what is being termed as "another case of ceasefire violation", a senior army official said the firing came from across the LoC, which divides Kashmir between India and Pakistan, in Mendhar sector, about 230 km from here, in the early hours of the morning.

August 3rd, 2009 SRINAGAR - Four separatist guerrillas and a soldier have been killed in the three-day north Kashmir gunfight that ended here early Monday. "Four terrorists have been killed in the gunfight with the security forces in the Nowgam sector of the line of control in Handwara district," a defence spokesman told IANS here.

June 29th, 2009 JAMMU - A soldier was killed in the Poonch sector of Jammu and Kashmir by a group of militants from Pakistan who were trying to infiltrate into Indian territory, an army official said Monday. Mohinder Singh of 8 Kumaon fell to a bullet fired from across the Line of Control (LoC) late Sunday, while another soldier had a narrow escape.

June 10th, 2009 JAMMU - Union Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad arrived here Wednesday to a rousing reception during his first visit to his home state Jammu and Kashmir after his induction in the central government. The former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister was received by over 5,000 supporters who had come here from various parts of Jammu district.

May 8th, 2009 JAMMU - Three people, including a woman, were killed by suspected militants in Reasi district of Jammu and Kashmir, police said Friday. A group of four terrorists barged into the house of Ahmad Malik at Badara in Mahore area around 10.30 p.m.

May 4th, 2009 JAMMU - At least 20 people were killed and 10 injured when the mini bus they were travelling in fell into the Chenab river in Kishtwar district of Jammu and Kashmir Monday morning, police said. The accident occurred at about 9 a.m.

March 28th, 2009 JAMMU - Army troops Saturday recovered a powerful improvised explosive device (IED) in a forest area of Jammu and Kashmir, an official said. The three-kg bomb was recovered in jungles of Thanna Mandi in Rajouri district, about 200 km northwest of Jammu, said a defence spokesman.

March 25th, 2009 SRINAGAR/ JAMMU - Shabir Ahmed Malik, a solider of the Jammu and Kashmir Light Infantry paramilitary trooper, who was killed in a five-day-long gunbattle in Jammu and Kashmir's Kupwara district, was cremated here on Tuesday with full state honours. Shops and business establishments remained closed in Srinagar on Tuesday to pay tribute to Malik.

March 9th, 2009 JAMMU - An Indian Army soldier Sunday deserted his unit and took away with him at least two Service weapons in a mountainous district in Jammu and Kashmir. According to the police, Zafar Ullah, a soldier with 169 Territorial Army posted in 8 Rashtriya Rifles in Doda district, ran away with two rifles.

February 25th, 2009 JAMMU - At least 25 people were killed and 17 injured in a bus accident in the mountainous Doda district of Jammu and Kashmir Wednesday morning, police said. The accident took place when the bus skidded off the road and fell into Neeru nullah, a tributary of Chenab river at Pul Doda in Doda district, about 170 km north-east of Jammu, the state's winter capital.

January 16th, 2009 JAMMU - At least 10 people were killed and 15 injured when a bus rolled down a mountain road in Jammu and Kashmir Saturday, the police said. The bus, going from Thathri to Gandoh carrying with 25 passengers on board, skidded off the road and rolled down over 500 feet near Karra, in Doda district, about 180 km northeast of Jammu.
