September 24th, 2009 LUCKNOW - After Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar offered 100 acres of land to the Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) to set up a centre in his state, the varsity Thursday asked for another 150-200 acres. "As per the lay-out proposed for the upcoming campus, we would require around 250-300 acres of land," AMU spokesman Rahat Abrar told IANS over telephone.

September 10th, 2009 LUCKNOW - Police had to face stiff opposition from students in Allahabad University Thursday when they tried to arrest the 12 students who Wednesday carried out violent protests on the campus while demanding restoration of students' union polls. Owing to the strong opposition of the varsity students, police managed to arrest only two of the 12 students who have been booked for Wednesday's vandalism on the campus.

March 19th, 2009 KOLKATA - Legendary Bengali singer Ramkumar Chattopadhyay, known for popularising the 'shyama sangeet' and 'tappa' genres in West Bengal, died at a private hospital here Wednesday, hospital officials said. He was 89. Chattopadhyay had been admitted to Belle Vue Clinic in south Kolkata with some complications March 9.

January 1st, 2009 KOLKATA - A 25-year-old man committed suicide after killing his wife, who was trying to elope with her lover, in a West Bengal village Friday, the police said. The incident took place in Chepani village under Alipurduar police station in Jalpaiguri district, some 550 km from here.
