Siliguri to have new railway recruitment centre

"We'll flag off a new train from Siliguri to Digha tomorrow (Monday), which will connect two tourist spots of the state.

August 26th, 2009 SILIGURI - To create awareness regarding the history and evolution of the heritage railway especially amongst schoolchildren, the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway (DHR) in collaboration with the Siliguri Science Centre has organised a week-long photo exhibition showcasing its glorious past of 128 years, in Siliguri. The exhibition, which will conclude on August 30, depicts the evolution of the DHR from its inception to the modern times.

August 20th, 2009 SILIGURI - Railway services in the Siliguri-New Jalpaiguri region were affected following the collapse of a rail bridge in Siliguri on Thursday morning. Heavy rains and strong river currents damaged the railway track and contributed to the collapse of the bridge.

July 10th, 2009 NEW DELHI - Despite the slowdown that has seen job cuts across sectors, the Indian Railways will fill 1.7 lakh vacant posts after reviewing the recruitment process, Railways Minister Mamata Banerjee said Friday. The Railway Recruitment Board (RRB) will review the hiring process and address regional aspirations and problems witnessed during recruitment in Maharashtra, Karnataka and Assam, Banerjee told the Rajya Sabha.

July 3rd, 2009 NEW DELHI - Several employee-friendly initiatives including medical colleges and nursing institutions for their children figured in Railways Minister Mamata Banerjee's budget for her ministry presented in the Lok Sabha Friday. The minister also announced advanced medical treatment for railway employees and special drive to recruit from the minority communities, the physically challenged and women as part of her budget proposals unveiled in the lower house of parliament.

May 28th, 2009 SILIGURI - Landslides in West Bengal have disrupted the movement of the world famous toy train, which is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site. The famous Darjeeling toy train runs between Siliguri and Darjeeling.

March 29th, 2009 SILIGURI - West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee Sunday said the possibility of the Left supporting a Congress-led government at the centre after the coming Lok Sabha elections cannot be ruled out, but that would depend on the post-election scenario. 'Now our attempt is to form a non-Congress and non-Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government at the centre,' Bhattacharjee told reporters after a party conference in northern West Bengal's Siliguri town.

March 25th, 2009 SILIGURI - In a major haul, custom officials seized a huge consignment of Marijuana worth 15 million rupees in Siliguri. Acting on information, the officials of Preventive Wing of Siliguri Customs Department chased a truck carrying coal, from which they recovered around 3.5 tons of Marijuana concealed in 177 packets, which they suspect to have come from Manipur.

March 7th, 2009 SILIGURI - A complaint was lodged Friday against the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) here for violating the election code of conduct by defacing the wall of a government building. The complaint was filed at the Siliguri police station by Siliguri Sadar Development Officer (SDO) Sarat Dwivedi, who is also the returning officer of the area.

January 5th, 2009 SILIGURI - A 16-year-old Bangladeshi student was found dead in a Siliguri hotel, the police said Tuesday, suspecting the teenager has committed suicide. 'Abdul Azij, a student of Class 10 in Delhi Public School, Siliguri, died at Gateway hotel,' inspector-in-charge Siliguri Prabhat Chakraborty said.
