Seven security guards shot dead in Algeria

October 7th, 2009 ISLAMABAD - Pakistan Interior Minister Rehman Malik has claimed that the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) chief Hakeemullah Mehsud is dead and the man who appeared in a recent video claiming to be Mehsud might be his look-alike. Talking to reporters after visiting the persons who were injured in the suicide attack on the UN building here, Malik said the man in the video might be Mehsud's brother.

September 12th, 2009 JAMMU - A 50-year-old man, the father of a former militant, was shot dead in a village in Jammu and Kashmir's Kishtwar district by terrorists, police said Sunday. Three militants led by Mohammad Amin, the area commander of the Harkat-ul-Jihad-al-Islami (HuJI) separatist outfit, barged into Ghulam Mohammad Chaupan's house in Sigdi village, some 250 km from here, Saturday night and shot him dead, an official said.

September 2nd, 2009 PATNA - Suspected Maoist guerrillas in Bihar have kidnapped six security guards working for a private construction company that had not met their extortion demand, police here said Wednesday. The incident took place late Tuesday when a group of armed guerrillas attacked the office of Subhash Projects & Marketing Ltd (SPML), a private road construction firm in Jamui district.

August 23rd, 2009 ISLAMABAD - Unidentified gunmen shot dead two military officers in Pakistan's northwest, according to media reports Sunday. Police sources were quoted as saying that some armed men opened indiscriminate fire late Saturday night on military intelligence officer Aftab Alam and military transport battalion official Ameer Hamza in front of their homes in the military area at Nowshera, a garrison city some 100 km northwest of Islamabad.

August 17th, 2009 ISLAMABAD - Allama Ali Sher, the leader of a banned Sunni group, was shot dead Monday morning in Pakistan's Khairpur town, a media report said. The chief of banned outfit Sipah-e-Sahaba was on his way back home from Dost Muhammed Abro in Sindh province when he was attacked.

August 2nd, 2009 ALGERIA/PARIS - At least 18 suspected terrorists were killed during Algerian Army operations in the eastern part of the country, media reports said Sunday. The dead were believed to belong to Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb, the reports said.

July 30th, 2009 PARIS/ALGIERS - At least 14 Algerian soldiers were killed when a group of Islamic extremists attacked a military convoy in northern Algeria, the daily El Watan reported Thursday. Other local media say that as many as 20 soldiers were killed in the attack at Tipasa, some 70 km west of the capital Algiers, and at least 20 were injured, in what is being called the deadliest attack in the area in years.

July 16th, 2009 ISLAMABAD - A UN official was shot dead Thursday in Peshawar, northwest Pakistan, TV reports said. Ibn-e-Usman, an official of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), was shot dead when he tried to resist an abduction bid by gunmen outside his office in the Katcha Garhi area of the city in North West Frontier Province (NWFP), the Express TV reported.

July 15th, 2009 BEIJING - Three Uighurs shot by Chinese police in the far western city of Urumqi had tried to take over a prayer meeting and called for a jihad, or holy war, state media said Wednesday. About 150 people were inside an unnamed mosque on Urumqi's Jiefang Road Monday afternoon when one of the three men tried to grab the microphone from the imam, the official China Daily reported.

July 9th, 2009 RAIPUR - Two people appointed as special police officers (SPOs) to assist security forces were gunned down by Maoists in Chhattisgarh, police said Thursday. The killings took place late Wednesday in the forests of Bijapur, about 450 km south from here, when a dozen armed Maoists attacked the two tribals -- Chhapri Surendra,23, and Mukesh Poriami, 25.

July 2nd, 2009 ISLAMABAD - Helicopter gunships attacked the hideouts of Islamist militants in Pakistan's tribal region bordering Afghanistan, killing at least 28 rebels in overnight action, security officials said Thursday. The bombardment came hours after a pro-government tribal elder, Malik Guli Shah, and his two guards were shot dead by gunmen in the Khyber district.

June 11th, 2009 WASHINGTON - The guard who was shot at the US Holocaust Memorial Museum here Wednesday died from his wounds, museum officials said. The guard was identified as Officer Stephen Tyrone Johns, who worked for the museum for six years.

June 7th, 2009 Algeria militants claim ambushALGERIA, Algiers — Al-Qaida-linked militants in Algeria have claimed responsibility for an ambush that killed 10 people this week but denied they deliberately targeted the two teachers who were among the victims. A statement released on the Internet by al-Qaida of the Islamic Maghreb, or AQIM, claimed the militants killed 100 people in 17 attacks through the months of May and early June.

June 5th, 2009 MAKHACHKALA - The interior minister of the southern Russian republic of Daghestan was shot dead Friday afternoon at a wedding reception here. "Daghestani Interior Minister Adilgerei Magomedtagirov died of gunshot wounds on the way to the hospital," an interior ministry spokesman said.
