McConnell: Need time to review Sotomayor’s record

WASHINGTON — The Senate’s top Republican says the debate over President Barack Obama’s first Supreme Court nominee should not begin with a deadline for a vote, as the president wants.

Obama has nominated appeals court judge Sonia Sotomayor for the high court.

Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky says that with so many of her legal opinions to review, senators should not be held to Obama’s desire that a confirmation vote take place before their summer vacation in August.

McConnell is staying away from comments by conservatives who are branding Sotomayor a racist. At the same time, McConnell says he isn’t out to patrol what other Republicans have to say on the issue.

McConnell appeared Sunday on CNN’s “State of the Union.”
