Sacramento mayor’s stolen goods found

SAN FRANCISCO — The suit and shoes that Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson said were stolen as he was assisting an elderly stranger in San Francisco over the weekend are on their way back to the NBA star-turned-politician.

Nathan Ballard, a spokesman for San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom, said Tuesday that he personally retrieved Johnson’s stolen garment bag from a man who reported having found it near where Johnson said he was robbed. The unidentified resident realized it was Johnson’s after seeing a television news report about the mayor’s travails.

Ballard says nothing appears to be missing. And he says his brother is personally ferrying the bag back to Johnson.

Johnson had joked about the incident in a blog post, saying he wanted to let Newsom know the same thing wouldn’t happen to Newsom in Sacramento.
