RI judge temporarily blocks state gov shutdown

PROVIDENCE, R.I. — A judge on Rhode Island’s Supreme Court has blocked a planned state government shutdown until the full court can consider the case.

Supreme Court Justice Maureen McKenna Goldberg decided Thursday to block Gov. Don Carcieri (kuh-CHEER’-eez) from forcing about 80 percent of state force to stay home without pay Friday.

Carcieri has scheduled one or two shutdown days every month until the start of the state’s next fiscal year in July. Friday’s closure was supposed to be the first. The shutdowns were meant to help close a $68 million budget shortfall.

Union lawyer Darren Corrente says the high court plans to meet with lawyers on Sept. 11. State worker unions oppose the shutdowns, saying they violate contracts.
