20 killed at power plant being built in India

NEW DELHI — A large chimney being built at a power plant in central India collapsed Wednesday, killing at least 20 people and injuring five others, police said. Dozens of workers were feared trapped under the rubble.

The 250-foot (75-meter) chimney came crashing down at the plant owned by Bharat Aluminum Co. at Korba in Chhattisgarh state, said Vishwa Ranjan, the director-general of police. He said the chimney hit a canteen where workers were having tea and about 100 were feared trapped.

“We have recovered 20 bodies so far,” Ranjan told The Associated Press.

He said rescuers were using heavy cranes and cutters to rescue those in the rubble.

Five injured people have been hospitalized, he said.

Ranjan said the power plant was being built by a Chinese company with the help of local contractors.

The cause of the accident was not immediately known.

About 300 people were working at the power plant at the time of the accident, the Press Trust of India news agency said.

Raman Singh, the top elected official of Chhattisgarh state, ordered a probe into the accident, PTI said.
