Report: Landslides kill 10 people in Bangladesh

DHAKA, Bangladesh — A domestic news agency says landslides caused by heavy rains have killed 10 people in southeastern Bangladesh.

The United News of Bangladesh reports the deaths occurred early Friday in Bandarban district 155 miles (248 kilometers) southeast of the capital Dhaka.

The report says huge chunks of earth buried a hillside hut killing five people from the same family in Lama village. Another five people from two families died in a landslide nearby.

Authorities in the region were not immediately available for comment.

Landslides often caused by heavy rains are common in the mountainous region.

Bangladesh is a low-lying delta nation of 150 million people. It is often buffeted by floods and cyclones.
