Report cites structural problems in awning’s fall

BRIDGEPORT, Texas — A preliminary report has determined that inefficient structural supports and weather factors contributed to the collapse of a northern Texas town’s storefront awning that killed a teenager and injured another.

Bridgeport City Engineer Konstantine Bakintas said in his report released Friday that the awning hadn’t shown signs of distress before it collapsed Tuesday, a calm summer day, so it apparently was a tragic accident.

Bakintas says humidity would cause the metal awning’s wood frame to shrink and swell over time. The report also cites deficiencies in how the awning was attached to the top of the building.

Bakintas says he doesn’t know if the awning was built improperly because he doesn’t know the building codes at the time.
