July 30th, 2009 RAIPUR - A marriage was solemnized inside a jail in Chhattisgarh when an 18-year-old rape victim walked in with her parents and officials hurried to arrange the wedding, going by the orders of a court. The rape accused Sheshmal Pare, 26, who was behind bars for over a year as an undertrial, is set to walk free within a day or two.

July 14th, 2009 PATNA - Two men -- one accused of molesting a girl and the other a suspected thief -- were lynched by mobs in Bihar's Gopalganj and Aurangabad districts, police said Tuesday. A man, identified only as Shivnath, was beaten to death Monday evening in Shahpur village in Gopalganj by family members and neighbours after a girl alleged that he had tried to molest her.

July 7th, 2009 PATNA - A gangster was beaten to death by a mob that nabbed him while he was trying to flee after killing a Hindu priest in Bihar's temple town of Gaya, police said Tuesday. A group of armed criminals led by Pahari shot dead Hindu priest Sidhnath Dhokri at Chandchaura Mohalla near Vishnupad temple in Gaya, about 100 from here, late Monday.

June 14th, 2009 SURAT - A day after an enraged mob attacked three men accused of rape, two of whom are sons of policemen, the Gujarat government ordered Sunday that the men would be tried in a fast track court. The men, Shahid Saiyad, Tariq Saiyad - both sons of policemen posted in Surat - and Abu Bakr Sheikh, are accused of raping a 17-year-old girl in a moving car June 12 and video filming the act.

May 23rd, 2009 PATNA - In ever-rising instances of mob rule in Bihar, two people, including an alleged rapist of a minor girl, were lynched Saturday, police said. Subhash Yadav, in his mid 20s, was beaten to death by an irate group in Naugachia in Bhagalpur after he allegedly raped a four-year-old girl Friday evening, an official said.

March 29th, 2009 PATNA - Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) president and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati kicked off her party's election campaign in Bihar Sunday. 'Please bring BSP to power at the centre to serve all, particularly the poor and weaker sections of the society,' Mayawati said in her address at a public meeting in Bhagalpur town, about 200 km from here.

March 13th, 2009 PATNA - A Maoist rebel has been beaten to death by a group of villagers in Bihar, a police official said Thursday. Ravidas alias Badal, a self-proclaimed area commander of the banned Communist Party of India-Maoist, was killed in Khaira village of Lakhisarai district, 160 km form here, Wednesday night, Additional Director General of Police Neelmani told reporters here.

March 5th, 2009 PATNA - In one more instance of 'mob justice' in Bihar, a group of people in Bhagalpur district Wednesday chased three suspected criminals and snatched one from a police vehicle and lynched them, officials said. The victims had allegedly robbed a truck driver and demanded extortion from a businessman in Balughat minutes before they were beaten to death at a rural market near Ratanganj in Bhagalpur, about 200 km from here, according to the officials.

January 30th, 2009 PATNA - A Dalit widow was beaten to death by five girls in a Bihar town after she objected to their cutting grass in her field, police said Saturday. Shobha Devi, in her 50s, a resident of Ram Tola in Saharsa town, 225 km from here, was lynched by the girls of a neighbouring village.

January 2nd, 2009 PATNA - Gautam Goswami, a former Patna district magistrate and a key accused in the Rs.170 million ($3.86 million) Bihar flood relief scam of 2004, was admitted to a hospital Saturday and his condition was described as critical, a family source said. Goswami has been suffering from cancer for over a year.
