Rahul Gandhi visits Maoist-affected districts in Jharkhand

September 29th, 2009 RANCHI - Five Maoist rebels, including two top leaders, have been arrested from two districts in Jharkhand, police said Tuesday. Four Maoist rebels were arrested Monday night from the Semara jungle, which falls under Palkot police station of Gumla district, around 145 km from here.

September 28th, 2009 RANCHI - Four guerrillas were killed by members of another Maoist group in Gumla district of Jharkhand Monday, police said. A gun battle between two groups of Maoist rebels took place at Salkaya jungle of Gumla, about 160 km from here.

September 3rd, 2009 RANCHI - Seven Maoist rebels were arrested after a nearly two-hour long gun battle with security personnel in Jharkhand's Garwah district Thursday evening, police said. The arrested rebels belong to Tritiya Prastuti Committee (TPC), a breakaway group of the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist), according to police.

July 29th, 2009 RANCHI - Jharkhand Wednesday declared seven more districts as drought hit after scanty rainfall affected paddy crop in the state. Earlier, four of Jharkhand's 24 districts were declared drought hit.

July 21st, 2009 RANCHI - The banned Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) has issued a threat against Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Congress president Sonia Gandhi and Home Minister P Chidambaram. The CPI-Maoist was declared a terror outfit by the central government last month.

July 16th, 2009 RANCHI - A Maoist commander was arrested in Jharkhand's Ramgarh district Thursday, police said. Area commander of Jharkhand Prastuti Committee (JPC) Ramanji was arrested from Burkunda area of Ramgarh district, some 80 km from Ranchi, police said.

July 7th, 2009 RANCHI - Jharkhand Tuesday declared four of its 24 districts as drought hit, an official said. The four districts which have been declared as drought hit are Palamau, Chatra, Latehar and Garhwa.

June 29th, 2009 RANCHI - Eleven Maoist guerrillas were arrested Monday from a Jharkhand village for distriibuting pamphlets. The Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) guerrillas were arrested from Cheliyama village in Seraikela and Kharsawa district, about 170 km from the state capital Ranchi.

June 21st, 2009 RANCHI - Security has been beefed up in Jharkhand in view of the two-day strike called by the Maoist rebels in five states to protest "Lalgarh operation" being undertaken by security forces in West Bengal. "Security has been beefed up in the state, particularly in Maoist infested districts and in areas bordering West Bengal," a police official told IANS, adding security personnel are on high alert in bordering areas.

June 1st, 2009 RANCHI - At least six trains were cancelled in Jharkhand Monday after the banned Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) called a strike to protest against the killings of their leader Sudhakar Reddy and Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) supremo Velupillai Prabhakaran. The cancelled trains include Garib Rath that plies from Ranchi to New Delhi.

April 11th, 2009 RANCHI - Five Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) troopers were killed and three injured Saturday in an eight-hour-long gunbattle with Maoist rebels in Jharkhand's Khuti district, around 20 km from where Congress president Sonia Gandhi addressed an election rally. 'Five CRPF personnel were killed and three were injured in an ambush by Maoist rebels in Khuti district,' Jharkhand Police spokesperson S.N.

March 31st, 2009 RANCHI - Congress chief Sonia Gandhi and party general secretary Rahul Gandhi will visit Jharkhand to campaign for party candidates in the Lok Sabha polls. Rahul Gandhi is arriving in Jharkhand Wednesday and will address two public rallies, while Sonia Gandhi will campaign in the state next week, Rabindra Singh, spokesperson of the state Congress told reporters.

February 1st, 2009 RANCHI - Maoist rebels blew up a tower for mobile telephony in Chatra district of Jharkhand, a police officer said Monday. More than 50 rebels belonging to Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) blew up the transmission tower of Airtel situated in Garo village of Chatra district, around 190 km from here, Sunday midnight.

January 27th, 2009 RANCHI - When different Maoist groups in Jharkhand boycotted the Republic Day celebrations and hoisted black flags, a smaller Maoist group saluted the tricolour and paid tribute to policemen killed in the Mumbai terror attack. Tritiya Prastuti Committee (TPC), a Maoist group active in five districts of Jharkhand has issued photographs and a statement saying that they paid tributes to the policemen killed in the Mumbai terror attack and hoisted the tricolour and also sang the national anthem.
