Quiet down! Government targets Grand Canyon noise

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. — Two federal agencies want to quiet things down at the Grand Canyon.

The National Park Service and the Federal Aviation Administration are working on proposals that would lessen aircraft noise over the park. Last year, the FAA recorded 56,000 air tours over the Grand Canyon.

The total number of tour and transportation flights below 18,000 feet could be reduced, depending on which parts of a half-dozen proposals are enacted.

One suggested change: giving air-tour operators financial incentives or more flight time for incorporating “quiet” technology.

In all, the proposals could reduce noise over the canyon by a total of 10 percent to 15 percent, with greater or lesser changes in some backcountry areas.
