Student booked for attempt murder in UCLA stabbing

LOS ANGELES — A UCLA student has been booked on suspicion of attempted murder in the stabbing of a fellow student in a chemistry lab on campus.

Los Angeles Police Officer Sara Faden says 20-year-old Damon Thompson was arrested Thursday in the Young Hall chemistry building shortly after the attack.

Authorities say he slashed the woman’s throat in front of other students who were in the undergraduate teaching lab at the time.

The woman, also 20, underwent surgery for multiple stab wounds at Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center. Police say she is in stable condition.

Campus Police Assistant Chief Jeff Young says Los Angeles city police and campus police interviewed about 30 witnesses who were in or near the lab at the time of the attack.

Thompson is being held on $1 million bail.

The motive is under investigation.
