Austria: Suspect arrested in poisoning of 5 people

VIENNA — Police in Vienna say they have arrested a man suspected of poisoning five people by serving them tainted drinks at a bar.

Authorities in the Austrian capital said the unidentified suspect was taken into custody after witnesses said they saw the man offer the victims drinks.

Police spokeswoman Iris Seper says all five victims are in life-threatening condition.

Seper says the five — three men and two women, all in their 20s or 30s — were taken to several hospitals around Vienna.

Investigators said between 40 and 50 people were in the bar in Vienna’s Alsergrund district when the five fell ill and collapsed Sunday afternoon.

There was no immediate information about a motive, and it was unclear whether the suspect was employed at the bar.
