Ore. man accused of arranging group sex assaults
NEWBERG, Ore. — A 44-year-old man was accused of rape, sodomy, sexual abuse and a variety of other sex-related crimes, including posting Craiglist ads to solicit others to join in group assaults on a teenage girl, authorities said Wednesday.
An adult woman, who is an acquaintance of main suspect Darrin Vaughn Daily, also was arrested for having sex with one of the victims, police said Wednesday.
Authorities learned about the alleged crimes on Sept. 4 when a 15-year-old girl told police that Daily, of Newberg, had given her marijuana and alcohol and had sex with her.
Police searched his apartment and seized evidence, including his computer.
Another girl, 14, later accused Daily of sexually abusing her and photographing the crime. That girl told them Daily had at times tied her up and forced her into group sex with men he solicited on the Web site Craigslist, and told police Daily photographed her having sex with his dog.
Detectives who analyzed Daily’s computer found images of the girl having sex with adults and the dog. Images of a 4-year-old girl being sexually abused were also found.
Daily was arrested Sept. 10, roughly a week after police first learned of the alleged sex crimes.
The allegations shocked this normally sedate community set amid Oregon’s renowned wine country.
“It’s disgusting. It’s beyond sick,” said Kim McCabe, who had just heard about it on the news.
Police have so far refused to say whether Daily previously had known his victims.
“Nobody was kidnapped or held against their will,” said Lt. Jeff Kosmicki, of the Newberg-Dundee police department.
He said alcohol, marijuana and “manipulation” were all factors in the cases involving the two teenage girls.
Police were able to find the 4-year-old, who told investigators that Daily sexually abused her. She is being cared for at a child abuse assessment center, according to police.
Daily is being held on $1 million bail in the Yamhill County Jail. He is accused of rape, sodomy, sex abuse, sexual assault of an animal, delivery of marijuana to a minor, online sexual corruption of a child, endangering the welfare of a minor and using a child in a display of sexually explicit conduct.
Authorities said the three men accused of responding to the Craigslist ad and taking part in the sex abuse are Patricio Moreno, 43, of Forest Grove; Robert D. Thompson, 34, of Portland; and David Garcia, 41, of McMinnville. They also were jailed in Yamhill County, although Garcia posted bail.
Thompson, Garcia and Moreno are all charged with sex abuse and third-degree rape. Thompson faced an additional charge of using a child in a display of sexually explicit conduct, while Moreno is accused of sodomy.
Police also arrested Alisa Nice of McMinnville. No age for her has been given. Sgt. Tim Weaver, police department spokesman, said Nice “is not part of the Craigslist relationships” but was already an acquaintance of Daily.
Daily’s attorney, Bernt Hansen, did not immediately return phone calls.
Thompson’s attorney, Janmarie Dielschneider, said: “At this point innocent until proven guilty is all I have.”
Moreno’s lawyer, Michael Finch, refused to comment.
It was not clear whether Garcia and Nice had attorneys as of Wednesday afternoon.
