Police: 3 Ind. jail guards hurt in escape attempt

VERNON, Ind. — Authorities say three teenage inmates in a southern Indiana jail attacked three guards and briefly held them hostage during an escape attempt.

Sheriff’s officials says three inmates at the Jennings County Jail stabbed two of the guards early Tuesday before officers shocked them with stun guns and took them into custody.

Guard Walter Peace suffered a stab wound to the head and was taken by helicopter to an Indianapolis hospital. Guard Vickie Day also was taken to a hospital for treatment.

Among those officials say was involved in the attack is a 17-year-old who faces murder charges in the shootings deaths last month of a 69-year-old man and his 65-year-old wife.

Police say the other inmates involved were 17 and 19 years old.
