DA: NYC sitter took cold medicine before baby died

NEW YORK — A prosecutor says a New York City baby sitter took cold medicine and slept as an 11-month-old boy fell headfirst into a bucket of water and died.

Relatives of James Farrior screamed at 28-year-old Krystal Khan as she appeared in court Tuesday. Bail was set at $5,000.

Police say Khan told them she had stepped out of the living room of her Queens home briefly on Monday, then returned to find the child in the mop bucket.

She’s been charged with endangering the welfare of a child.

The medical examiner says further tests are needed to determine the exact cause of death.

District Attorney Richard A. Brown says Khan faces as much as a year in jail if convicted.

Khan’s attorney, Eugene Guarino, says the mother of two is distraught and “extremely remorseful.”
