Lawyer settles over NY plane crash solicitations

NEWARK, N.J. — A New Jersey attorney accused of soliciting families of victims of a plane that crashed into a New York home too soon after the accident has settled a lawsuit with the government.

The U.S. attorney for the Western District of New York says Montvale lawyer Richard J. Weiner paid $5,000 to settle the civil action stemming from the Feb. 12 crash of Colgan Air Flight 3407 near Buffalo.

An investigation by the Department of Transportation found Weiner had solicited victims’ families before the 45-day waiting period had ended.

The lawsuit alleged Weiner sent letters to families in early March. Weiner admits he violated the law.

The flight originated in Newark and crashed in suburban Clarence, N.Y., killing all 49 people on board and one person on the ground. About a dozen victims were from New Jersey.
